If your store prices depend on exchange rates, manual updates quickly become a recurring maintenance task: check the current rate, open JoomShopping settings, update the value, and remember to repeat the process again later.
Refresh Currency for JoomShopping 5+ automates this process. The extension retrieves current exchange rates from the selected source and updates store currencies according to a schedule using the standard Joomla Task Scheduler.
You choose the rate source, update frequency, optional percentage adjustment, and the currencies that should remain under manual control.
Configure it once — currency rates are then updated according to schedule.
There is no need to regularly open JoomShopping currency settings and change rates manually.
When exchange rates affect store prices
For stores with imported products, purchases in foreign currencies, or multiple currencies on the website, keeping exchange rates current directly affects correct price conversion.
When rates change regularly, manual maintenance creates several problems:
- exchange rate changes must be monitored constantly;
- values must be updated manually in JoomShopping;
- it is easy to miss an update;
- a commercial exchange rate may require an additional adjustment;
- different currencies may require different handling.
Refresh Currency moves this work into an automated Joomla process.
Scheduled updates
Update frequency and execution time are configured through the standard Joomla Task Scheduler.
Exchange rate source
Select one of the exchange rate sources available in the extension settings. Monobank is supported as one of the available sources.
Percentage adjustment
A percentage markup can be applied to the retrieved rate to create your own store calculation rate.
Currency exclusions
Individual currencies can be excluded from automatic updates and kept at manually defined rates.
Automatic updates instead of manual maintenance
The main purpose of the extension is to keep JoomShopping currency rates up to date without regular manual editing.
Once the task has been configured, Joomla runs the update automatically according to the selected schedule.
This is especially useful for stores where exchange rates are part of daily pricing operations and need to be updated much more frequently than other store settings.
It is the JoomShopping exchange-rate maintenance that becomes automated.
The administrator no longer needs to manually retrieve rates and transfer them into store settings each time.
Scheduling through Joomla Task Scheduler
Refresh Currency uses the standard Joomla Task Scheduler rather than a separate proprietary execution mechanism.
A currency update task is created automatically for the Joomla scheduler and can then be managed through the familiar administrator interface.
You can configure the required execution frequency depending on how often rates need to be refreshed in your store.
Automatic execution requires Joomla Task Scheduler to be configured to run. The time in the relevant task setting is specified in UTC.
Choose the exchange rate source
The rate source is selected directly in the task settings.
The extension works with the exchange-rate sources available in its configuration. In particular, the current version supports retrieving rates from Monobank.
This allows external banking data to be used as the basis for automatic JoomShopping currency updates.
Create your own commercial rate with a markup
The bank exchange rate does not always need to be used by the store without adjustment.
For example, the store owner may want an additional margin to compensate for exchange-rate fluctuations between the update time and the actual purchase or payment for goods.
Refresh Currency provides a percentage markup applied to the retrieved exchange rate.
During automatic updates, the extension applies the configured adjustment, allowing the store to use its own calculated rate rather than simply copying the source value.
Retrieved rate + your adjustment.
There is no need to manually recalculate and change the rate after every automatic update.
Not every currency needs automatic updates
A store may use several currencies with different pricing logic.
Some may require an automatically updated banking rate, while others may use a fixed value defined by the administrator.
Refresh Currency allows individual currencies to be added to an exclusion list.
Their rates will not be changed during automatic execution, allowing manually configured JoomShopping rates to remain unchanged.
Test the task before automating it
After configuration, there is no need to wait for the next scheduled execution.
The task can be run manually through Joomla Task Scheduler so you can immediately verify the currency update result.
This allows you to check the selected source, percentage adjustment, and other settings before relying on automatic execution.
Task execution history
Because currency updates are integrated with the standard Joomla scheduler, administrators can use its built-in monitoring tools.
Execution information is available in the task history.
This is more transparent than an automation process that runs in the background without making it clear whether the latest execution actually occurred.
Separate update log
Logging can be enabled for the task and a dedicated log file name can be configured.
The log helps verify automatic update operation and provides additional information when diagnosing possible issues.
Execution and error notifications
Refresh Currency uses Joomla Task Scheduler capabilities for task notifications.
Scheduler settings can be used to configure notifications for successful execution and errors.
This means the automation does not have to operate without administrator oversight.
Check the latest retrieved rates
The task settings provide access to a file containing the latest retrieved exchange rates.
This makes it possible to quickly verify the data returned by the source without separately searching for it in the external service.
For stores using multiple currencies
If customers need not only automatically updated exchange rates but also the ability to switch the currency used to display prices, you can use the
Currency Selection Module for JoomShopping 5+
.
These solutions perform different tasks:
Refresh Currency
Automatically maintains JoomShopping currency rates according to the selected source, schedule, and adjustment.
Allows customers to switch between published store currencies on the website.
Where automatic currency updates are especially useful
Refresh Currency is particularly useful for stores where exchange rates are part of everyday price management.
For example:
- products are purchased in foreign currencies;
- the catalog uses several currencies;
- product prices depend on current exchange rates;
- the store uses its own commercial rate with an additional adjustment;
- some currencies need automatic updates while others must remain fixed.
In these scenarios, automation removes a repetitive manual store-maintenance task.
